How teachers ruined my writing career

By Michael Wooller

I'm quite a good writer. In my own way.
When I was in my early teens I discovered I had quite a flare for writing funny pieces. I think it was just the way that my somewhat dry humour expressed itself in print. My peers enjoyed my writings and so too did the teachers. I used to get special requests to read my latest works out loud. It was always something witty.
Now, instead of encouraging my endeavours, as would have been nurturing, my english teacher, in his infinite wisdom and fearing I was becoming too satirical, suggested that I should change my style and write something more serious.
Which I did. I wrote a western. It was horrible. I just didn't have the mindset for serious stories.
So from being a very popular humorous story teller I went to being a flop just about overnight. My confidence never really recovered and I never wrote for pleasure again until I was in my 50's.
It just goes to show how important the quality of a teacher is and what the long term effects of bad teaching are.
You never know I might have gone on to write a piece of global iconic proportions. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I usd to hate writing, but in the past few years I have come to understand that I have an ability to write pieces that have a lot of humor in them, whether it is made up, or more often than not my views on life or stories from my life. I would love to write a novel, but trying to write seriously is something I have trouble dealing with. I think a main character would have to have a good sense of humor at least if I did.
